풀 컴플리멘터리/풀 밸런스 전원 게인 회로를 채용한 크렐의 프리앰프

창업자가 떠난 신생 크렐에서 등장한 프리앰프 신제품.
L/R 각각의 신호처리 기판을 아래위로 나눈 듀얼모노럴 구성, 풀 컴플리멘터리/풀밸런스 회로, 네거티브 피드백을 걸지 않고 저왜율 특성을 실현한 전류 게인회로, 래더형 저항을 이용하여 12비트 분해능을 얻은 완전 밸런스형 아날로그 볼륨과 이제까지 동사가 배양해 온 기술요소를 가다듬어 구석구석까지 담아낸 데에 우선 주목하기 바란다.

프런트 패널의 푸르게 빛나는 표시부와 딤플이 주어진 볼륨노브 등 크렐다운 어그레시브한 디자인도 그대로 계승되어 있다. 또한 메인의 신호처리 회로와는 완전히 분리된 헤드폰 출력을 준비해 놓고 있으며, 이번 시청에서는 들을 수 없었지만 옵션으로 ESS의 SABRE 32비트 DAC칩을 사용한 디지털 입력 보드를 준비하고 있다고 한다.

본지 레퍼런스 시스템에 조합하여 그 음을 들었는데, 한색 계열의 음색과 잘리는 맛이 좋은 느낌을 소구하는 소닉 퍼포먼스는 크렐 이미지를 저버리지 않는 훌륭한 면이었다. 쿠바의 피아니스트, 추초 발데스의 ‘Chucho Valdes’(96kHz/24비트•LAC)에서 들을 수 있는, 난무하는 퍼커션의 색상 선명한 표현력은 이 기기 특유의 맛일 것이며, ‘Smash/파트리샤 바버’(96k Hz/24비 트•LAC)의 인스트루먼틀 넘버 ‘Bashful’에서 들을 수 있는 심벌 레가토의 생생한 질량감의 표현은 본지 레 퍼런스 프리앰프 이상의 매력이 있다고 실감했다.

원포인트 스테레오 녹음된 ‘La Segunda/Sera Una Noche’(176.4kHz/24비트•AV)를 들으면 음장의 펼침은 소극적이며, 울림의 감촉은 약간 거친 질감이 특유의 맛이라는 것을 알 수 있다.

확산형이라기보다는 응축형의 음장 표현을 제시하는 경향이다. 한편 여성 보컬의 요염함이 풍부한 표현이나 목관악기의 느긋한 울림새는 이기기 특유의 무엇과도 바꿀 수 없이 소중한 매력. 음상 리얼리티 중시를 관철하는 매니시(mannish) 한 음조에 크렐의 전통이 살아 있다고 확신했다.

The Phantom III is the first Krell preamplifier to include either an optional digital input module or a headphone output. The digital module features AES/EBU, coaxial, and optical digital inputs for use with streaming devices or other digital sources.

Circuitry Highlights

The Phantom preamplifier is a dual monaural design with the left and right channels afforded their own power supply regulation and individual circuit boards. All signal gain is executed with surface mount technology using proprietary multiple-output current mirrors with nearly 500 times the open loop linearity of other designs. Featuring 700 kHz bandwidth in a zero feedback, balanced, Krell Current Mode design, the Phantom III shares the same design philosophy as its bigger brother, the flagship Phantom preamplifier. Negative feedback is not used anywhere in the preamp, nor is it necessary. Open-loop distortion is typically less than 0.003%. The volume control is realized with a balanced resistor ladder - bandwidth and transient response of the preamp circuitry are virtually unaffected by the volume setting. The headphone circuitry is identical to the main circuitry, offering private listening with the same performance as speaker playback.

Digital Module Highlights

The digital module supports up to 24 bit/192kHz LPCM. All digital signals are fed to an ESS Sabre DAC and then sent to Krell's Current Mode, discrete, balanced analog circuitry. Being a modular design, the optional digital converter module is easily added at any time.

Power Supply Highlights

Oversized for a preamplifier, the power supply features a 95 VA transformer and 40,000 μF of capacitance giving it the ability to respond quickly to musical demands. The large power supply improves noise rejection and renders the Phantom III impervious to all but the most severe AC voltage power fluctuations. A new eco-friendly standby mode reduces power consumption to 2W
