Scandinavian hi-fi has something in common with Scandinavian furniture - it just looks, well, different. Those northern souls have an eye for aesthetics that presumably won't be to everyone's taste, but which do seem to stand out from the crowd in a consistently smart and elegant way. Primare is certainly a fine example of this: its small but perfectly formed range is in many ways the epitome of fine hi-fi (just short of the loony high end) and these amps really look the part for expensive audio. But do they measure up in the sound quality department?
Before we get deeply into that, a quick summary of what they offer. What we're looking at here is a fully fledged preamp/power amp system, each box sticking to a precisely defined function. The PRE30 selects the appropriate input, controls its volume and sends it onwards down a cable to the A30.2, which amplifies it to the levels needed to drive the loudspeakers. Not so much to do, then, for the PRE30 - if you want to play LPs you'll need another unit to boost the tiny signal from the pick-up cartridge. Come to think, how does the PRE30 justify its price?
The job of the line-only preamp might not look like much, but you're paying for two things: first, the unit's propensity for not getting it wrong (always bear in mind, unromantic though it may seem, that the best audio equipment is that which gets it wrong least - only in the most limited sense can it ever improve on what it's given in the way of music programme), which is a surprisingly tall order; and second, the excellent build quality, look and feel, fit and finish - in short, pride of ownership, just as it applies to most other long-term purchases, from cars to cutlery sets.

So in aid of getting it as near perfectly right as possible, Primare fits the PRE30 with a notably large and capable power supply, high quality signal-switching relays, a precision electronic volume control and no less than seven pairs of inputs, including two 'balanced' inputs on professional-style XLR connectors. Outputs are via conventional phono plugs or more balanced XLRs. All this care and attention to detail should help ensure that the delicate audio signals are uncorrupted by disturbing influences such as are found in the near neighbourhood of high power stages - hence the whole rationale of separate pre and power amps.
The A30.2 power amp, naturally, matches with Pre30 in having phono and XLR sockets available (choose unbalanced or balanced cables to suit) and features 'dual mono' construction to minimise interaction between channels - each channel has not only its own circuits but its own mains transformer too. They're pretty big transformers, feeding generally chunky power supplies and output stages which have no trouble meeting the 120-watt output rating. In practical terms, that's enough power to make all but the hungriest speakers in the biggest rooms sound loud. You can get 'loud' for a lot less money than this. What we want here is quality loud.

And having kept you in suspense for a bit it's high time we spilled the beans. These are indeed quality amplifiers. They sound every bit as good as they look - if anything, even better. They've got deep bass, clear treble, extended treble, pretty much the whole checklist of hi-fi requirements.
More than that, though, they've got that indefinable quality that just makes the music seem that little bit more real than with inferior audio products. It's more real, and by the same token, it's more involving and more inviting, and as ever the true test is that after listening to a few tracks you find yourself wanting to listen to yet more rather than going off to do something else. You end up rediscovering half your recorded music collection, hearing things in familiar tracks that you hadn't previously noticed, for the first time decoding every word in the lyrics of some well-known song, identifying at last that odd noise in the middle of an instrumental...
If you've a more analytical tendency, you'll appreciate particularly the way these amps seem to keep track of an almost endless number of separate musical strands without mixing them up, so that for instance in a symphony orchestra it's always possible to follow the violins, oboes and clarinets separately if you want to, while still appreciating how they mesh and contribute to the whole effect.
Partly this is due to the tonal consistency of the amps, partly to their low subjective distortion (they measure pretty well, as it happens, but the important part is that they always sound really clean), and partly to their happy knack of preserving accurate stereo imaging both sideways and fore-and-aft, which always helps one identify particular sounds within the whole.
There's no denying that £2,400 is a lot to spend on amplifiers, but all things considered these Primare units amply justify the expense. They are highly capable, well specified, beautifully built as well as being a joy to own and use and are highly recommended.
